In May 2019, the first major exhibition for Josip Štolcer Slavenski’s 123rd birthday took place under the motto 123 SLA VEN SKI, which was created in cooperation with the artists Stefan Jovanović, Marija Knežević and Ivana Vukobrad. In addition to the exhibition there was a musical performance by the artist group Petar Drapšin. The exhibition venue was the Ostavinska Gallery in Belgrade, Serbia.
The focus of the exhibition was to organize a party for Slavenski. Inspired by old Yugoslav salons of the 1920s, where artists, musicians and intellectuals exchanged ideas, a room was created that brought Slavenski’s work closer to the viewer and was intended to create a party atmosphere. As if a bygone era had been catapulted into ours. Dark, velvety fabrics, Slavenski's quotes, poster fragments, paper garlands, old carpets, photo collages, scattered throughout the room. The music and arts group Petar Drapšin from Novi Sad provided a musical performance in the evening. Inspired by Slavenski’s compositions, short pieces of music were performed.
Since autumn 2015 I have been researching the life and work of one of the most important and original Yugoslav avant-garde composers of the 20th century: Josip Štolcer Slavenski. In addition to his impressive work, what fascinates me and spurs my research is the current treatment of Slavenski by today's successor peoples of Yugoslavia. Where other nations would praise a master like Slavenski, little attention is paid to him. Actually, he is hardly known.
I started to organize an event every year for Slavenski’s birthday on May 11th. Be it an exhibition, workshop, concert or online presentation, every year I take a new approach with the aim of showing a work on that date that was inspired by him. Accordingly, it is important to me to involve people from the fields of art and music in the project. To me it is essential to collaborate with museums, music schools, musicians, other events, musicologists, galleries and artists. You can read about the 122nd anniversary exhibition at Palmas Gallery in Belgrade here. For the 124th slaven.ski was created with detailed information about the history and the music of the composer. For the 125th anniversary year, 125 posters were created and exhibited in Görlitz. More about this here.
